SCAAA Elder Rights Team Sponsors Fashion Shows
07/03/2006 --
The Southern Crescent
Area Agency on Aging Elder Rights Team sponsored two special “Fashion
Show” events during Older Americans Month. Both events were
successful with various agencies modeling authentic uniforms and providing
information to seniors concerning “what to ask for” if an unknown
person comes onto their property. Events held at the
Thomaston
Civic
Center
and the Coweta Fairgrounds reached 700 seniors.
Elder Rights Team
members provided an introduction concerning group focus, the importance of
being aware of people in the community, and scams which prey on seniors.
The Fashion Show goal was to provide information and increase senior
awareness of fraud and abuse occurring when people misrepresent themselves
to gain access to the home.
Fashion show
participants included police, sheriff, firefighters, EMTs, ambulance
staff, UPS, BellSouth, security companies, and utility workers from cable,
electric, gas, and water departments. They modeled official uniforms
and identification badges to better educate and protect seniors from
becoming victims of fraud and abuse. The fashion show was a great
method to educate seniors on “what to look for” and “what questions
to ask” and seniors enjoyed the information provided and had questions
for our models afterwards.
The Southern Crescent
Elder Rights Team meets bi-monthly at the
Newnan
Coweta
Senior
Center
. Membership includes staff from GeorgiaCares, Ombudsmen, APS, CCSP
Care Management, Georgia Legal Services ELAP, and the Area Agency on Aging
Deputy Director. The group hosts annual events to bring awareness of
elder abuse, exploitation and neglect into our communities.
