Hurricane Survivor
Area Agency on Aging Aids Hurricane Katrina Survivor
10/05/2005 --
Judith Sumrall, a
Mississippi
resident, survived one of the most devastating storms of the century.
Judith who has been a victim of muscular dystrophy since the age of
forty-two is wheelchair bound. She
and her husband of twenty-seven years were trapped in the standing water in her
home for nearly three days without food or fresh water.
They were unable to be rescued due to the water level in the house.
The pressure of the water would not allow them to open the doors.
Jack’s brothers finally were able to wade to them once the flood water
receded. After their rescue Judith
was transported to a hospital in
Pensacola
,
Florida
, where she was treated and released to the care of her twin sister Janet Wild
of
Griffin
,
Georgia
.
Judith, a retiree from Government Land Use Management Services, is currently
residing with Janet in
Griffin
where she is receiving home services through the Southern Crescent Area Agency
on Aging In-Home sub-contractor. Judith
thanks God to be a survivor and feels very blessed to have family and agencies
such as the AAA who reach out to those in crisis.
Southern Crescent Area Senior Centers assisted some local
shelters by providing food and other items to Katrina evacuees.
We wish Judith and her family the very best.
