Division of Aging Services launches statewide access line to the Aging Network
July 11, 2007 ATLANTA (GA) -- There is now one single toll-free number that people can call to connect to Georgia’s Aging Network and services for seniors. The Georgia Department of Human Resources Division of Aging Services (DAS) launched the new statewide access line on July 1, 2007. The number, 1-866-55-Aging (1-866-552-4464), connects Georgians automatically to their local Area Agency on Aging (AAA) Gateway, GeorgiaCares, the Long-Term Care Ombudsman program, Adult Protective Services Central Intake, and the DAS state office. Previously, callers would need to know which of Georgia’s twelve AAAs served their county of residence before choosing one of twelve numbers to call. The single statewide toll-free number will provide easier access to information about services available in each region and will allow the Aging Network to market services statewide. The call menu is available in both English and Spanish. "We are proud to offer a single number that our clients and customers can use to easily contact us for information and assistance related to available services," said DAS Director Maria Greene. "This statewide access number will assist DAS staff, our Aging Network and other partners in providing a seamless point of contact for service." The Aging Network is a partnership of DAS, the AAAs, and providers which responds to the needs of seniors, families, caregivers, service provider agencies and community programs throughout the state. Some of the services available through local AAAs include: connecting persons to health-related programs, transportation, housing options and financial assistance; funding a variety of services provided at the community level that support the health, well-being and independence of older citizens and their caregivers; providing home-delivered meals (Meals on Wheels) as well as meals provided at senior centers or other designated sites; helping protect the basic needs of the most vulnerable elderly through programs such as the Georgia Long-Term Care Ombudsman Program, elder abuse prevention and legal assistance services through the Elderly Legal Assistance Program (ELAP); and funding Senior Community Service Employment Programs that help low-income seniors age 55 and older obtain paid employment. Callers can now access the Georgia Aging Network by calling a single toll-free number to connect to all aging programs at 1-866-55-Aging (1-866-552-4464). Callers may also chose to continue using program specific toll-free numbers such as those for the GeorgiaCares program, 1-800-669-8387; the Long-Term Care Ombudsman (LTCO) program, 1-888-454-5826; and the Adult Protective Services Central Intake Unit, 1-888-774-0152. In addition, callers may still choose to use the AAAs individual toll-free numbers.
